26 April 2010 Dear parents/carers Welcome back to the final terms of this academic year. The spring terms were brought to a close with the fun of welly-throwing and tag-day; thanks to the PTA for organising this and for their support on other occasions. Reconciliation Class C’s Service of Reconciliation last term was well-attended by parents and family. Well done to everyone that had worked so hard to prepare the children for this day. The children received a gift from the PTA and a certificate as a well-deserved reward for all their efforts. Community Thanks to those who sent in money in support of the Cabrini Society during Lent. If you haven’t yet returned your box please do so by Friday 30 April. Curriculum and After-school Activities Art The KS2 Art Club has been running for a year now and is greatly enjoyed by those that attend. Thanks to all the parents that have helped in running this. Mrs Davey is looking for someone to take over the running of this club when her daughter leaves the school in July. Let us know if you would be interested. Sport We continue to provide a range of sporting activities. The netball tournament took place last week and we were delighted with the attitude and sportsmanship of the team, who did very well. Miss Vallejo was proud of the way they played and conducted themselves. So well done to her and all those who took part in the practices as well as those in the tournament. Thanks to those parents who have come forward to help Miss Vallejo with a football club, which will be starting shortly. Music You will see from the dates that we are not holding a summer concert in school this year, although we will be providing other opportunities for pupils to perform. This is because we have over the past few years been working more closely with other schools, so that pupils have a chance to perform in a larger group and to a wider audience. There are plans for a number of activities throughout June and July and we will keep the different music groups/year groups informed of those they can participate in. Dates and Topics Attached is a list of dates for the next two terms and also the topics that children will be working on in class. Do also check our website (www.englishmartyrs.medway.sch.uk). Let us hope the sun continues to shine. We will make greater use of the school field at lunch times from Term 6 - weather permitting. Yours faithfully M Pearson Headteacher 11th March 2010 Dear parents/carers, Lent is a time for us to reflect on our lives and what is important in them. No doubt some of you are “giving up” something that is a treat for you or alternatively “doing” something extra. The children too set themselves challenges in their work and lives and it is always satisfying to see the success that is achieved. “Excellence is never an accident” has been our thought for last week and this. Fundraising This period of reflection also enables us to consider what life would be like without so many of the things that we perhaps take for granted. The children’s response to the earthquake in Haiti was to do something that would contribute funds to help the people affected to rebuild their lives. Congratulations to all who helped to raise £407.30 We continue to collect money for the Cabrini Society and collecting boxes should be returned at the end of term. Open Evening There was a good attendance at Open Evening last week. The children do like to get their books and work ready for you to see, so thank you for your support. Apologies that we had to postpone Class C’s Open Evening. It has been rearranged for 29th April. Please note this date in your diaries now and we will be in touch nearer the time to organise appointment times. 50th Celebrations You will have seen the leaflet linked to this that was sent out last week. In addition there will be other events taking place. On Friday 3rd September there will be Mass in church at 6.00 p.m., which will be celebrated by the bishop. This will be followed by an Open Evening in the school. If you know of anyone that has any connection with the school, who you think might be interested, then please pass on information about the 3rd and 4th September to them so that we can reach out to as many people as possible. Parents’ Groups The PTA continue to offer invaluable support to the school and we are grateful to all those who give so much time in whatever way they can. Art Club is thriving. Thanks to all those parents that help to organise and run this. The work the children did in the pottery workshops recently was amazing; they made tremendous progress over the course of a few weeks. Ms Davey is running this club until July this year when her daughter leaves to go to Secondary school. If anyone is interested in keeping this club going please let us know. Many of you “give up” and “do” so much throughout the year, not just at Lent. This is vitally important to the whole school community. Staff, parents and pupils working together is certainly something to reflect on and celebrate. “Excellence is never an accident” but something we all work hard to achieve. Yours faithfully M Pearson Headteacher
